Do I have a magnesium deficiency?

As humans, we continuously require magnesium ...

Magnesium is a natural mineral and a major regulator in our body. Magnesium is the third necessity for sustaining human life. As with the first two - oxygen and water - our body constantly consumes magnesium and cannot stock up on it. Our body uses what it needs and any surplus is excreted through the kidneys or through perspiration. This also means that we cannot get too much magnesium.

magnesium deficiency: various complaints

A magnesium deficiency, o body always requires enough magnesium! An important property of magnesium is relaxation. Where calcium ensures that the muscles tighten, magnesium ensures that they relax. Cramps, for example, are a sign of acute magnesium deficiency. But magnesium can also be helpful in combating stress to sleep better. The effect of magnesium is therefore very diverse.

hand, is always lurking and contributes to the development of all kinds of complaints and ailments such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Depression and lack of energy are also associated with this. In other words, your

As with oxygen and water, we have to get magnesium from "outside" the body. This is highly dependent on our diet. Magnesium can be found in green vegetables, dark chocolate, nuts and grains. Unfortunately, the amount of magnesium in these products is getting less and less. This has to do with the impoverishment of the soil, which means that plants do not absorb enough minerals from the soil. This has resulted in about 70% (!) of the world population not getting the recommended daily amount of magnesium. Our lifestyles (smoking, alcohol, stress) and frequent medication can also contribute to this. Zechsal has a list of medications known for this. You can request this list from our customer service. Notorious are statins and antacids, for example.

The recommended daily amount

How much magnesium does the body need? The recommended daily amount (RDA) of magnesium is 350 to 400 mg. We think a better guideline is that of Dr. Marianne Mousain-Bosc, namely 6 mg magnesium per kg body weight. Most people get half of their daily requirement from food, which is why we recommend adding half of the RDA. Please note: every person is unique and the need for magnesium is therefore very personal. Keep listening to your own body to determine your daily needs! As mentioned earlier, a deficiency of magnesium can cause a wide variety of complaints. For many people, what they take in daily through food is insufficient and therefore the body becomes unbalanced. Magnesium deficiency can slowly increase and gradually cause more complaints. To ensure that you get the recommended daily amount, supplementation of half your RDA is desirable.

Magnesium plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of sore muscles. It is a natural aid for relaxation and keeps your muscles flexible. It prevents muscle pain with regular use.

Muscle cramps

Cramps may be caused by a magnesium deficiency, among other things. If this is the case, the muscles are unable to absorb enough magnesium. Extra magnesium can help prevent and treat cramps.

A magnesium deficiency can cause listlessness or fatigue complaints. Besides exercise and relaxation, magnesium  is indispensable for the production of energy.

During pregnancy, the magnesium requirement is 20 to 40% higher than normal! Extra magnesium contributes to more relaxation, more concentration, a better memory.
